DISCLOSE Act Defeated. For Now.

McConnell even describes it correctly.  Though surprising that a RINO didn’t find a way to blow it, take the good news when we can get it.  The DISCLOSE act failed to meet the cloture vote, and was defeated.  For now.

This bill isn’t hard to understand.  The Democrats want to hamstring their opponents just shy of an election, especially grassroots organizations like the Tea Party.  That’s all it does, since the Supreme Court took a lot of the trash out of McCain-Feingold.

Chuck Schumer swears they will continue to vote until it passes.  He can feel free to try that route.  If he’s chewing up time trying to make this turkey law, the Senate isn’t voting on other mind-numbingly destructive legislation like cap-and-trade.

We can all see November from our houses now.  Sooner or later, Schumer’s fellow Democrats are going to want to go home and work to save their jobs.  Almost certainly sooner, and this legislative session can’t end soon enough.

Hey, How About Some More Tripe From Lindsey Graham?

We don’t get enough tripe from Lindsey Graham, after all.  So why not some more on Elena Kagan?

As though it wasn’t already patently obvious, Lindsey Graham said some nice things about Elena Kagan, and was then the only Republican on the Judiciary committee to vote in favor of sending her to the floor.  If McConnell really wanted to patch up things with the base in advance of an election, he could replace Graham with an actual Republican in a very loud way.  What’s The Official Maverick Lapdog (Pomerianian – SC) going to do, be honest and switch parties?  I’m sure the Democrats could give him a Specter special (remove his seniority) for his trouble.

But that would take leadership, foresight, and guts, so McConnell won’t do it.

He gave the usual “elections have consequences” babble, which means one of two things having nothing to do with any principles.  Graham is either pandering in some way with absolutely no payoff, or it’s “How dare you cost us everything, conservatives!  We’re going to make you pay!”  In either event, he’s just another useless maverick being mavericky.  At least until his owner returns, and he can spend more time being an arrogant holier-than-thou while McCain takes over in the spotlight.

On a more fun note, one of his consultants said…

He’s a thinking person’s conservative. I expect him to do well among voters with IQ’s in triple digits.

…plus, he has a fine new set of clothes he’d like to sell you.  It was made by two tailors who once worked for an Emperor.  These clothes are special because only fools can’t see them!  Identify the idiots among your friends and neighbors today!

In any event, congrats again to Lindsey Graham.  He’s proved that not only can he be McCain’s lapdog, but he can be the Democrats’ useful idiot at the very same time.  In fact, if they tell him how smart he is, he’ll roll over for anyone.  Good doggie.

These Republicans are “On Our Side?”

What’s with “No RINOs, no exceptions?”

It’s not just a nice-sounding demagogic.  Moderate Republicans and RINOs aren’t our partners in stopping Democrats, however much they portray themselves to be every election cycle.  As they just recently demonstrated with the Financial “Reform” disaster, they’re an internal threat.  They don’t betray us any more than they believe will be reluctantly tolerated by the conservative masses who “have no where else to go,” but they do it enough to inflict real harm and prevent bad policy reversals.

That means they’re not our friends and partners, and don’t deserve our support.

Now in the practical sense, the best we could hope for is to keep RINO numbers to a powerless minimum.  However, “No RINOs, no exceptions” is still a worthwhile goal, if only to give us all something at which to aim.  Otherwise, if we rebuild the Republican Party to what it was under Bush, for all intents and purposes the Democrats will still have majorities.

Take our latest example of this fact from Trent Lott.  We backed him up after the Strom Thurmond remarks.  We backed him as Senate leader.  But now that he’s a lobbyist, he can show his true colors, along with those of every other RINO in the Senate.

Former Senate majority leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), now a D.C. lobbyist, warned that a robust bloc of rabble-rousers spells further Senate dysfunction. “We don’t need a lot of Jim DeMint disciples,” Lott said in an interview. “As soon as they get here, we need to co-opt them.”

Yes, actually we do need Jim DeMint followers.  We want him to short-circuit the establishment leadership, and no, you’re not co-opting anyone unless they’d like to lose their jobs.  You losers had your chance, and blew it.  You wanted to self-destruct, and this time we’re going to help you along.

How about some demonstrated leadership from our fearless Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell?  His thoughts on the accusations of Tea Party racism?  You know, that group with the energy and passion to help increase the size of his caucus if properly motivated?

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) declined even to wade into the discussion on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“I am not interested in getting into that debate … I have got better things to do than to wade in to all of these disputes and discussions that are going on out in the country,” McConnell said.

That about sums up his drive and determination as Senate Minority Leader too.

These Republicans are “on our side?”  If someone like McCain wins the nomination in August, which seems increasingly likely, we should move heaven and earth to re-elect him knowing his past record and exactly what he’ll do should he return?  Are we to feel “like adults” or “not be whiners” by backing a known betrayer?  It’s better to deal with an honest enemy or an internal threat.

To oppose and ultimately repeal the Democrat disasters, we need a party willing to put up a fight.  Practical time constraints lead one to conclude refurbishing the Republicans is the fastest way to accomplish that.  But the party infestation of RINOs is not part of that solution.  They’re an obstacle to this and have to go.

A Few Words of Clarity for Senator McConnell

dive_elephantAs reported by The Hill, Senator McConnell isn’t sure if the GOP can block a vote to pass the health care “reform” bill through reconciliation.  Doesn’t that just inspire confidence?  Anyone?

This sounds like a good time for a few words of clarity for Senator McConnell.

I don’t know exactly what he’s thinking, but the Republicans can stop this bill.  They can just offer up amendments to it forever, and some Republicans are threatening to do just that.  I’m also aware that McConnell has stepped in and prevented other Republicans from doing things like forcing bills and amendments to be read in full in order to slow down legislation in the past.  That means this particular comment may well be him making excuses in advance of a “compromise” health care bill, or setting up an “out” after a token show fight against the current one.

Neither will help him.  If he thinks he has problems with the Tea Parties and people deserting the Republicans now, let this bill pass when we know you can stop it.  If that happens, McConnell and the Republicans will quickly get to know electoral hell.  It’ll probably take the form of a third party movement that no one will be able to squelch this time.  At the very least, it will take the form of a lot of people simply refusing to turn out in November due to morale loss.  If either happens, there goes the comeback.

No tricks.  No games.  No tokenism.  This bill is dead, and it needs to stay that way.  Do something original, McConnell, and actually try to win.
