Sorry for the slow posting here lately. I’m back to work now after some overtime and a cold, and here’s a great place to start. Obama attacked Congressman Boehner directly in a speech on the economy.
Not only that, but it was the most brazen spin yet on his beliefs in what America should be. The man sounds like a conservative. You can read it for yourself if you want be flabbergasted at the Wall Street Journal (hat tip to Michelle Malkin for pointing me at it.)
The bottom line though: Is Obama trying to pre-Gingrich Boehner? I think he is. Otherwise, this speech would not have happened.
In 1994, the Republicans won the House and Gingrich became Speaker. Shortly thereafter, the Democrats unleashed hell upon him. First he softened, and then he resigned. Clinton triangulated and stole a lot of credit in the process by pretending to be conservative. Obama’s speech bears shades of the Gingrich treatment.
It’s much the same tack here. Obama is pretending he’s a mainstream American, and he believes in our values, but he doesn’t agree with the Republicans because they’re too extreme/class warfare/’failed policies’/take your pick. It’s the Clinton technique of claiming to believe in the same things the Republicans do, but not wanting to do things their way because they’re icky.
He’s also not waiting for someone he believes may be the next Speaker of the House to officially take the reins before beginning the barrage, or an attempt to pre-Gingrich Boehner. Hopefully Boehner is ready for the onslaught, and doesn’t try in vain to appease the rabid socialists like his predecessors did. Otherwise, he may end up like Gingrich when he loses his friends in a futile attempt to moderate for his enemies.
