No jokes now, folks. It’s zero flak time.
As reported in a couple of places now, a new bill called the DISCLOSE Act is up in Congress. It’s the Democrat’s response to the Supreme Court decision that ended large chunks of the McCain-Feingold mess following their usual form: If a law is struck down, just pass it again. Only this bill could very well allow the FEC to regulate the blogosphere too. The article lists it as sloppy language, but I’m calling baloney on that.
If this bill could allow for the FEC to regulate the blogosphere, there’s no way on Earth it’s not deliberate.
It would be impossible, even for a group of people as oblivious as Congressional incumbents, to miss the fact the blogosphere is having a major impact on campaign results. It’s arguable that the Bennett loss, for example, had a lot to do with Coldwarrior’s Precinct Project and the work of Erick Erickson, both at RedState. Given this recent event, a great many other incumbents might just find it handy if a new batch of impossibly complex campaign speech laws hamstrings bloggers just prior to an election.
This bill needs to be stopped.
