I suppose most people opposing the “maverick” John McCain weren’t happy with today. He held a rally in Tuscon with Sarah Palin, who continued her unbroken streak as a huge draw. In the scheme of things, it may even take him over the finish line.
Still, it’s not without a price.
I can’t help but to wonder how it feels for The Mavericky One. After all this time he spent in the Senate, all the time he spent becoming a media darling, all the insider allies he has, all the money he’s raised, all the ads he ran, he still has a real chance of losing. In fact, if you want to see Sarah Palin’s visit in a new light, this is “maverick” John McCain admitting that he can’t win without his betters.
We can all understand why Sarah’s doing it. While I find her sense of gratitude refreshing in light of politics as usual, she doesn’t owe him anything more. He introduced her to the national spotlight, certainly, but she accomplished the rest of becoming famous on her own. Plus, she prevented him from suffering his well-deserved fifty state mavericking after the TARP vote, which is more than enough payoff given her treatment thereafter by his ungrateful person and staff.
So let him smile and wave at the fact we evil nasty conservatives might once again be thwarted in getting rid of him due to the classy if annoying timed assistance of Sarah Palin. I’m sure he’ll be able to live with knowing that no one at their rallies are there to see him. Once he gets his Senate seat again, he won’t be bothered in the least by the unmistakable truth that a previously unknown politician from Alaska who’s only been on the national scene for around a year and a half has politically outclassed him in every measurable respect.
It’s ok. We understand.
