Do the Democrats think that if they pass this bill, it will finally be over?
They may be living in the microcosm where their leadership just won’t back off until it’s done, but that’s not a good definition of “it’s finally over.” Do they think that if they do pass this bill, they’ll go back to their constituents and never hear a word about it again? If they do, they’re in for a shock.
The only way this bill will be “over” is if it’s defeated.
If it passes, particularly with the Slaughter Solution, it’s going to court. Mark Levin is already threatening it. That will put it back in the public eye for months. Their constituencies will be suffering the shock of a new individual mandate, so some of them will be going to court too. If they’re successful in getting it overturned, it’s the worst of both worlds for the Democrats. Not only did they vote “yes” on a bill no one wants, but they don’t have it anymore either.
Oh, the unions are going to desert the Democrats if they fail? Where are they going to go? They’re not going to start supporting Republican candidates or form their own Tea Parties. The conservative side of the aisle isn’t going to promote their agenda of union member serfdom for the benefit of their leaderships, so they can take their empty threats elsewhere.
The Democrats want this to be over? They should vote the bill down, then take the gold-plated ethics investigation opportunity the Republicans handed them and end Pelosi’s speakership with it so she can’t try again. That blowout vote certainly wasn’t about the moral outrage Massa’s behavior caused them, so why not finish the job?
Otherwise, it will never be over. There will years upon years of “not over” to torment them for this singular moment of foolishness, cowardice, and greed.
