Go It Alone? What’s Stopping You?

By Ryan • on August 19, 2009

doctorknotOh, so Obama is floating a trial balloon about the Democrats going it alone on health care “reform”.  Yes, in terms of practical considerations, he can do it.  So what’s stopping him from just doing it right now?

How about these?

  1. Obama knows his plan is a disaster.  He knows what will happen if it passes.  Since all he wants is the power grab, he doesn’t care.  But if the Democrats own this bill, which will happen if they don’t get any Republican support, there’s no “Well, the Republicans voted for it too” behind which to hide in 2010.
  2. Several of those big special interests that vote and donate Democrat time and again get screwed royally, especially senior citizens.  Satisfying as I may find the fact that Democrat supporters will be brutalized by it as much as I am, this bill and it’s passage is about a lot more than my own schadenfreude.  They’ll think so too, and there will be no one but the Democrats to blame if those Democrats go it alone.
  3. On top of nationalizing 1/6 th of America’s economy,  Democrats will also be spending money we don’t have on a new entitlement that won’t work.  It will cost more, do less, and otherwise make the trials and tribulations of our current system look like molehills compared to mountains.
  4. In short, if the Democrats own Disastercare, Disastercare will own them.

Granted, Obama may well be trying to scare some Republicans into submission and “bipartisanship” with this trial balloon.  I can’t exactly fault his judgment when it comes to making that sort of an appraisal of his opponents’ spinal fortitude.  But if he screws this up, electoral payback awaits in 2010…
