Judge Sonia Sotomayor Next Disaster for Supreme Court

Obama has nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court.  She’s as much of a hack judicial activist disaster as you’d expect a liberal like Obama to nominate.  The problem is that, politically speaking, she may be unstoppable.

She’s a political activist who couldn’t care less about the Constitution, but she’s also a female Hispanic.  That means there are enough cowering fools in the Republican party to insure she won’t face much opposition, and what she does get will be derided by Republican moderates.  “We’re going to tell the bigots to shut up” and all that.

And yes, I’ve already heard the obligatory sarcastic remark about not voting for McCain.  My response to that is that McCain would have “reached across the aisle”, i.e. become a Democrat for the duration, on any issue of substance, including judicial nominees.  The Democrats would have only had to start making noise about someone like this for the Supreme Court, and McCain would have jumped right on board.

At least I can still do my own fighting, and so can you.  Write, call, fax, and protest if you want this nomination blocked.

More Nukes from the Norks

Truly, I don’t know who thought of the Nork term, but if you’re reading this right now, you did good =).

However, I wish they were as fun as their nickname.  They just completed another underground nuclear test, and fired a short-range missile to boot.  So basically, they’re running out of stuff again.

In response, Obama promises to discuss this with the UN.  I’m sure the Norks will get down to being scared just as soon as they stop yawning at this news.  Heck, there might even be a strongly-worded letter involved.  Possibly more.

Remembering on Memorial Day

No jokes now, folks.  It’s zero flak time.

I dish out a fair amount of lunacy on my blog as I comment on the issues of the day, and especially on its namesake.  But this post isn’t the time for it.  Today is Memorial Day, and a time to remember those that fell to defend our country and freedom.  That includes the First Amendment rights I have to run blog as nutty as mine.

I have no problem with the cookouts and vacation time many people will have today.  I have the day off too, and am in fact enjoying it.  Just take a moment to remember why we have this day, and show some gratitude for those we remember on it.

The Credit Card Conundrum?

Obama signed a new credit card bill into law today.  It does things like limit surprise interest spikes, and had a lot of industry resistance, but it passed by wide margins.  But it’s not the bill that interests me.  It’s some speculation I’ve heard about what happens next.

There has been some discussion that the credit card companies are now going to start using people who pay their bills responsibly to make up the difference for those that don’t.  After all that’s happened in Washington, I can understand the concern some people have in this matter.  I can also understand the concern given liberalism’s sterling track record of bungling all it touches.  But let’s say for a moment that this is actually true, and one of these companies is dumb enough to try and wring those who can pay for those that don’t.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Yes, the credit card issuer can control the policy, but they can’t control you.  The government might be able to force you to pay them money, but the banks can’t.
  2. That means you can drop your card account.  Credit cards are not a life necessity.  They’re nice to have around, yes.  Can you live without them?  Maybe not as conveniently, but yes.
  3. So, for those of you fearing backdoor attempts to make up the costs of deadbeats at your expense, and the companies who might consider using you responsible credit card holders as piggy banks for the losers, it won’t work.  The companies will lose customers and whine without being able to make up the difference.
  4. This is of course presuming all of them are dumb enough to try something like that at the same time.  If one company does it and the rest don’t, kiss that one dumb company’s credit card business goodbye.

Yes, there may be problems, but there is a countermove.  If a credit card issuer wants to try and make up the difference at your expense, just don’t be their customer anymore.
