Apparently, Specter has decided he would like to be re-elected.
In an about-face on an earlier position, Specter has decided to oppose card check. His floor speech contained the usual moderate bunk about being the voice of reason, and how he’s one of the few, but I’m personally not having any of it.
This bill is painfully simple, Senator Specter. Either you are for the enslavement of workers to corrupt, selfish unions via union thuggery and the theft of the secret ballot, or you’re not. This bill is a union payoff and nothing more. All your fancy words and pretentions to intellectual discourse will not change this fact, or the fact you waffled on a bill this potentially destructive.
If the workers voluntarily wish to unionize, they can do so with the secret ballot. They don’t need card check; the unions do. The unions are shrinking because workers are looking at them and thinking twice, which card check would short circuit. Apparently, incidents like that whole Eastern Airlines spat doesn’t appeal to potenial union members.
Therefore, whine to someone who’s listening, Senator. Or better still, get a grip.
