Being Irrelevant Sucks, Doesn’t It?

Life can’t be happy if you’re a Republican in Congress lately.

Take the stimulus boondoggle, for example.  If their answer to Princess Caroline, Senator Collins, sells out like she did, they’re screwed.  If Specter starts being the Democrat he actually is like he did, they’re screwed.  And it gets even better.  Since they can’t keep all of their caucus in line, when this bill does pass through Congress with just one or two Republican liberals, it will be called “bipartisan” by everyone in the MSM.  So the Republicans will get to partake of the Democrats’ 100% failure rate, and pay for it with an infuriated base come 2010.

They have no one but themselves to blame.

They can’t control their caucus.  They won’t fight their opposition.  They refuse to listen to their base, and most importantly, they put their power over their country for eight years.  Now they’re staring at a Democrat power grab attempt they can’t stop, which could very well make their current irrelevance permanent.

Oh, come election time, they and the radio show hosts will be saying “we have to support Republicans because they’re different from the Democrats”, but no one will believe the RINOs are worth saving any more than I do now.  Furthermore, all the Democrats’ efforts to buy votes and patronage will have expanded their now very motivated base, and it will be time for electoral backhand #3.

Still, it’s not too late for them yet.  They still have the chance to get a grip, and this bill will tell if they take it.  I’ve seen some signs of hope, but not too many.  In the end, I suspect they’ll be the same Republicans which have put themselves here.

Eternity is a terrible thought. I mean, where's it going to end?
