Our new Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says he won’t sell dozens of parcels of federal land for oil drilling in Utah until Obama can take a “second look” at them. Or so the spin goes.
If the Democrats stay true to form, not one of those parcels will ever be sold. The Democrats would have to infuriate one of their loudest special interest groups in order to allow it: the environmentalists. The trouble is, most of the general public wants us to produce our own oil.
So, the Democrats will pull something like one of the following:
- Say they agree with oil drilling, but keep finding an endless parade of reasons why we can’t do it. “There isn’t the right place” or “We haven’t studied it enough” or something that sounds intelligent and nuanced.
- The “second look” Ken Salazar is mentioning will take so long, everyone will forget about it and move on to something else.
- In either event, the Democrats will have gotten what they wanted, which is absolutely no more domestic oil production whatsoever. Furthermore, they will have done it without having to look like the alternative energy pipe-dream loons they are.
It’s Democrat Politics 101: Oppose something reasonable without having to look like you oppose it and lose votes in the process.
